The threats to the Blue World: focus EcoeFISHent

The threats to the Mediterranean Sea and the EcoFISHent project, which promotes a circular and sustainable model to make the most of fishery industry by-products, integrating the blue and green economy.

Fishing Impact: the effects of fishing and possible solutions

Trawling is considered a poorly selective fishing activity, which produces a high percentage of bycatch and discards. This lesson provides a description of technical solutions (e.g., mesh shape and size, selective grids, etc.) aimed at increasing the selectivity of this fishing technique.

Speaker: Mario Sbrana

Foto profilo Mario SbranaHe obtained his Master’s degree in Biological Sciences (1988) and his PhD in Marine Ecology (1996). He has over 30 years of experience in the field of fisheries biology.

From 2003 to 2006, he worked at the European Commission as a fisheries inspector, responsible for assessing the implementation of control and inspection activities in Member States.

He currently works at the Consortium for the Inter-University Centre for Marine Biology and Applied Ecology (CIBM) in Livorno, Italy. Since 2002, he has participated in activities under the European Union’s Data Collection Framework on fisheries (DCF).

His work focuses on fisheries studies, fish biology and population dynamics, stock assessment, selectivity of longline and trawl gears, and experimentation with less-impactful alternative fishing gear.

He is the author/co-author of over 40 scientific articles in international journals and 60 in national journals. Throughout his career, he has participated in more than 150 research projects in the field of fisheries biology. Recently (2021), he served as the scientific coordinator of the EU project “Improving the selectivity of trawl gears in the Mediterranean Sea to advance the exploitation pattern of trawl fisheries (IMPLEMED).”

From 2019 to 2021, he was chairman of the Nekton and Fisheries Committee of the Italian Society of Marine Biology.

The EcoeFISHent project

EcoeFISHent is a European project that promotes a circular and sustainable model to enhance the value of by-products from the fishing industry, integrating the blue and green economy.

The aim is to transform fish processing by-products into ingredients for food supplements, cosmetics and biodegradable packaging materials, as well as fertilisers and biodiesel oil.

Moreover, the EcoeFISHent partnership is working to develop and implement a marine environment protection programme through the collection, recovery and recycling of abandoned and/or discarded fishing nets, which will be used to produce automotive components and packaging for cosmetic products. This is a concrete initiative to reduce the impact on the marine environment and promote a more sustainable development.
