The project is funded by the European Commission through the Horizon 2020 program, focused on the Liguria region and northwestern Italy, with a duration of 5 years and involves the collaboration of 34 partners from 7 countries: Bulgaria, Israel, Italy, France, Kenya, Norway, and Spain.

The goal of the EcoeFISHent project is to create a sustainable and replicable territorial cluster in Northwestern Italy, centred on the Liguria region, to promote the territorial spreading of circular economy principles through the eco-efficient valorisation of waste from the fishing supply chain. The project will contribute to the creation of new jobs in the area, including for disadvantaged groups, and will represent a unique model in Europe that will later be replicated internationally.

Thanks to the involvement of WWF Italy and the Portofino Marine Protected Area, the consortium will establish a marine environment protection program through the collection, recovery, and recycling of abandoned and/or discarded fishing nets, as well as the implementation of a sustainable fishing program in the Ligurian territory.

Project Objectives

Thanks also to the support of international research centres, innovative technologies, and processes, the project will develop six innovative, sustainable, and climate-neutral circular value chains (CVCs), which will allow consumers to access sustainable products in the cosmetics, nutraceutical, packaging, and automotive sectors. Specifically, the actions coordinated by WWF will focus on:

  • Testing to increase the selectivity of fishing gear in the Ligurian Sea in order to reduce bycatch and preserve biodiversity, as well as the balance and health of ecosystems.

  • Implementing a “Stop Ghost Gear” program to put an end to lost and abandoned fishing gear, aimed at preventing their dispersion in the sea and removing such gear from the seabed of the Portofino Marine Protected Area, also considering recycling options.
