Threats to the Blue World

This module examines the challenges the Mediterranean Sea faces today, from the threats of anchoring to alien species, from plastic pollution to unsustainable fishing, from climate change to chemical and noise pollution.

Deep-Sea Mining: extracting minerals in deep waters

One of the threats facing the Mediterranean Sea is Deep Sea Mining.

Hidden in the depths of the sea are incredibly rich and fragile ecosystems – true treasure troves of life. Yet these very same areas are also home to valuable mineral resources (lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese), which are increasingly attracting the interest of major industries.

Several companies are now seeking to exploit these metals from the ocean floor to meet the growing demand for resources.

The report features “The map of the rush for the seabed”, which shows where the three largest deep-sea mineral deposits are located around the world. It highlights how deep-sea mining could affect almost every corner of our oceans.

Because of the lack of scientific data, it is not yet possible to regulate this activity in a way that would prevent serious damage to marine ecosystems and loss of biodiversity. Many of the impacts of Deep-Sea Mining remain poorly understood and could be potentially irreversible, especially in such fragile environments that take centuries to recover.

WWF Italy’s call

WWF Italy is calling for a moratorium of at least 15 years, until the environmental, social and economic risks of this industry are fully understood, and until it can be managed with a real guarantee of marine protection.

We must explore all possible alternatives to deep-sea minerals. Only then can proper regulation be put in place to safeguard both the marine environment and human well-being.
